Demystifying the Bandhas

It is common in yoga class to hear the instruction “engage the bandhas.” It’s also common to wonder “what the heck does that mean?”

In this two-hour class, Christina will review the three most commonly referred to bandhas — Jalandahara, Uddiyana, and Moola bandha — and lead us through a series of asanas and explorations to help locate them in the throat, abdomen, and pelvic floor.

The word bandha is often translated as “lock.” The use of these energetic and physical “locks”  is a bit paradoxical, as there is an “unlocking” in the mind and energetic body that occurs by “locking” these particular muscle groups.

Christina will also review the benefits of using the bandhas during asana practice, as well as when not to use them (such as during pregnancy). Proper use of this powerful yogic tool has great benefits, both during the yoga practice and to overall good health.  During yoga, using the bandhas protects the low back in many asanas, especially inversions, and can increase concentration.  Off the mat, bandha use helps to lower blood pressure and regulate of the digestive system.
