Frequently Asked Questions:

  • If I am a beginner, what’s the best class for me?

Any basics class will suit new students -be sure to let the teacher know that you’re brand new to the practice.

  • How long are the classes?

Most classes at Mala Yoga run for 90mins with a few exceptions.
The following classes run for 75mins:  Prenatal, Baby & Me, 7am’s & 8:45pms
Express Classes run for 60mins
Special workshops and kids classes along with meditation run at different lengths.

  • What should I wear to yoga class?  Do I need to buy a yoga mat?

Wear comfortable clothes that allow for freedom of movement.  Yoga is best practiced in bare feet, so be prepared to leave your socks in the closet!  If you don’t own a yoga mat, you can rent one for $1. All other yoga props – blankets, blocks, straps – are provided free of charge.

  • Do I need to pre-register for classes?

No – all classes on the Mala Yoga schedule happen on a drop-in basis. It’s best on the weeknights and weekends to arrive 10 minutes before class to ensure your spot.  If we do offer a special workshop or a series (like Bija Kids Yoga), we will indicate that its offered by preregistration.

  • How do I know what class is right for me?

Each teacher at Mala teaches in a different style. We have added a “What Class is Right For Me?” on our Class Descriptions page.  We use common yoga terms to organize the influences on our teaching staff.  We hope this will point you in the right direction.  If you have more specific questions, please ask the teacher directly or email info@malayoganyc.com

  • I just bought a yoga mat and it is slippery when I use it. Any suggestions?

New yoga mats often have a coating on them that makes them slippery. See if the manufacturer included any instructions with the mat or on their website that will help you break it in.  If not, roll your mat out at home and leave it in a corner of your home where you can walk on it with bare feet (or let your kids play on it).  Then wash your mat in a front-loader washing machine with a small amount of laundry detergent, then let it drip dry.  The walking/washing combination usually does the trick.

  • Where do I find Bija Kids information?

Under the Workshops Page. In the right hand column there is a listing, Bija Kids, click on it and you will be taken to the Bija Kids page where the current session dates are listed.  Click here for a quick link to that page.
