September News
The 4:30pm; all levels classes are back on Tuesdays & Thursdays.
Last class for 2:00pm; prenatal is Sunday, Sept 11th.
We have a new class happening on Thursdays at 11:00am called Core Fundamentals:Whether you are a new mom trying to reconnect to her body and figure out how to heal those aching wrists, a freelancer hunched over the computer all day, or just in need of a class that focuses on common aches, pains and misalignments, join Christina & Marco-Jo in this new class offering at Mala. We will break down areas of the body and focus on them in six-week increments, moving from the bottom (feet) all the way up. The classes are designed to build on each other, and provide specific work to ground and strengthen our legs, align our hips, strengthen our core and address shoulder and wrist issues.
And Finally, this weekend marks the 10th anniversary of September 11th. There are many things happening throughout the city to give us support and allow us to commemorate that day, here are a few we recommend.
By Love Alone: A Day of Meditation on the 10th Anniversary of the World Trade Center Attacks
Hosted by The ID Project
Sunday, September 11th
The Parade Grounds on Governor’s Island,
11am-4pm
theidproject.org
Join us on September 11th, 2011 as we commemorate the 9/11 tragedy with a free public meditation event, held in the spirit of love and healing. People of all faiths are invited to join members of The Interdependence Project, the Shambhala Center, the Jewish Meditation Center of Brooklyn, The Village Zendo, Won Buddhism of Manhattan,Buddhist Peace Fellowship, and other NYC meditation and spiritual communities. Some of New York’s leading meditation teachers, including Acharya Judy Leif and Alison Laichter, will provide guided instruction throughout the day. Together, we will open our hearts to all people affected by this tragedy, and wish for the well-being of all who have brought compassion and peace to our city over the past decade. To support this intention, we will practice a Loving-kindness (Mettā) contemplation that generates love within one’s self and gradually extends it outwards to others.

Winter Retreat, January 21-29, 2012
Stretch, Strengthen & Release: Mala Yoga in Guatemala
Winter Retreat, January 21-29, 2012
Villa Sumaya, Lake Atitlan, Guatemala
We’re thrilled to announce our third annual international retreat to Lake Atitlan, Guatemala.
In the spirit of Robert Thurman’s teachings on retreats, we are calling this week an “advance” not a retreat! We hope you can join Angela & Steph on this wonderful trip.
Retreats imply getting away and not engaging, but thinking of this week as an advance sets a different tone from the beginning.
Our focus is “stretch, strengthen, release”. Each of us connects to our yoga practice through different on-ramps. Our asana, meditation, and breathwork techniques and explorations can curate a more holistic approach to our practice. This year, we’re adding backbending, hip-opening, and forward bending to our inversion practices, experiencing the benefits of daily work on these poses, in an intimate setting.
We welcome anyone, regardless of level, who wants strengthen, refine, and “advance” their practices.
Our retreat partner for 2012 is the wonderful team at Villa Sumaya, in the heart of Guatemala’s highlands. Villa Sumaya offers opportunities to discover Lake Atitlan’s living and legendary landscape. The hotel and retreat center is seductively situated on the picturesque shores of Lake Atitlan (at 1,500 ms/4500 ft above sea level). With an uninterrupted vista punctuated only by a skyline of three perfect volcanoes, Villa Sumaya is the ultimate high for yoga students in search of rest, reflection and ageless natural beauty. In addition to our yoga classes, you can indulge in the spa, hike volcanoes, explore the local Mayan culture, and simply practice the fine art of laying on the beach, staring at the water or the sky
